If you're looking for laser quality without the traditional laser price, the Brother HL-1440 may be the ideal choice. This high-quality black-and-white printer handles jobs at an impressively speedy 15 pages per minute while maintaining a 1,200 x 600 dpi resolution -- all for a reasonable price.
Setup with the HL-1440 is simple and straightforward, with connections for both parallel port and USB. It comes with a standard 250-sheet paper tray and supports manual duplexing. A manual paper feed is handy for inserting unusually thick papers. The drivers utilize economical power and toner-saving modes, and the unique Shockwave-based Print Management System! (software) combines straightforward operation with an exciting interface.

I got my printer today. It went from the box to active duty (i.e. printing pages) in 7 minutes. I'm running XP-Home using an USB printer interface with no issues. The driver came on the included CD. The install process has an option to check for an updated driver -- I did this but the CD already had the latest version. I have the base printer with 2-meg of memory but am upgrading to 34-meg ASAP. Though I've yet to need the extra memory for this printer, with memory so cheap these days I'm going to make sure printer memory is never again an issue (I've lived with an HP 5L with 1-meg of memory for 5 years). Bottom line: Though my comments by no means reflect a long term road test, every indication is that I definitely made the right choice. Thanks Brother!!!
