This player is well-designed and easy to use ... assuming you can get it running! The firmware that comes with the player is not compatible with some motherboards, and SonicBlue doesn't tell you which ones these are, so you have no way of knowing when you buy it. I have an MSI Nvidia Nforce motherboard with an AMD chip, and the player refused to connect to my PC through the USB port. The Rio S10 just kept rebooting endlessly. I found out I needed the newest version of the firmware (1.6) after navigating their poorly-designed support webpage for way too long. But how can I upload the new firmware if it won't connect to my PC?!?!? I managed to get the Rio S10 running on a friend's laptop with which the player was compatible and upgraded the firmware through his machine. When I plugged it back into my machine, it now connected (one problem solved), but I now cannot upload songs without major errors! I'm lucky if I can get one song uploaded at a time without the software (both Rio Music Manager and RealOne Player, both of which come with the player) crashing and the upload stalling. I can't format the player (erase the songs) without the software crashing. It's aboslutely ridiculous. It takes me 15 minutes of messing around to get 10 songs on the player, including having to [shutdown] and restart the software and the player mutliple times. Most of the files that I do finally get transferred have errors in them causing hiccups and splotches in the songs. All that is bad enough, but to top it off, SonicBlue's support is horrendous. After you are put on hold for *at least* half an hour, you'll get somebody in tech support who barely speaks English. It took me 10 minutes just to get them to understand the problem. They then did a lousy job helping me by giving me all sorts of poor advice that didn't help at all. It's clear that the firmware is incompatible with my motherboard, but the tech support people refuse to admit that and keep wasting my time by making me do stuff like reinstall the software a million times. I'm truly disappointed and will never buy a SonicBlue product again. I definitely don't recommend this player (unless you want to chance that it will work with your motherboard). It's not so much that the player had problems, but much more disturbing was SonicBlue's inability and lack of effort to support it when things did go wrong. They have made it as difficult as possible, and now I have a $$$ piece of junk on my desk. (by An electronics fan) Features/Technical Specs : What people search: |
