The HL-1240 provides true 600 x 600 dpi resolution at up to 12 pages per minute (ppm). Plus, with a 250-sheet paper tray, USB and parallel interfaces, and a low price, the HL-1240 offers both performance and value.
To set up the HL-1240, we followed the quick setup guide; we inserted the CD-ROM and followed the remaining directions from an onscreen instructional video. The CD-ROM video demonstrated how to install the toner cartridge, load the paper, print a test page, and connect the cables. (We chose parallel cables for testing purposes). The CD-ROM then installed the software and ran the Windows Add New Hardware wizard. The toner cartridge also snapped easily into place with no spills. Overall, setup was very intuitive; it took 30 minutes, delayed only by the slow pace of the instructional video.
We performed all our tests with the print settings on automatic, with a resolution of 600 dpi, and with the toner-saver mode off. We printed one page of text with mixed fonts and font sizes in 20 seconds, compared with the manufacturer's rating of 15 seconds. Five additional pages printed in 34 seconds (8.82 ppm, compared with the manufacturer's rating of 12 ppm). We also printed three 8-by-10-inch photos in 28 seconds (6.43 ppm). The text was laser-perfect, with no extraneous dots, pixelation, smears, or smudges. The grayscale interpretation of our color photograph was warm and true to the original, adding only the extra softness that you would expect from any laser printer.
We especially liked the printer driver, with its intuitive interface for changing printer settings, specifying manual duplex printing, and creating 'watermarks.' The paper is easy to load, and a handy rear door directs the printer's output either to the top or out the back.
We appreciated the simple theme of the HL-1240--easy setup, no frills, quality performance, and speed for a good price. --Mike Brown

Within this dollar range, I had a choice between a black and white Laser machine, and a color Jet Ink machine. I'm glad I selected the Brother HL-1240.
Set-up was simple. Plug in the power cord and the USB line, install the software, and I was up and running. With only two lines running from the back of the machine, the overall appearance is uncluttered. Also, there is no awkward AC-DC converter box.
Grayscale printing quality on inexpensive bond paper is excellent.
While printing, the noise level is very low. In the energy-saver mode, the Brother HL-1240 is inaudible.
Minor annoyances: The on/off button is located on the back of the printer - impossible to reach while sitting at the keyboard. The paper tray accepts legal size paper, but protrudes approximately 3-inches from the rear of the machine.
For Macintosh users: I've configured the printing software several different ways, but still, I have no 'desktop' printer icon allowing drag-and-drop printing.
Overall, the Brother HL-1240 is an excellent bargain. Very pleased.
