Whether you're frightened of hookups or tight on shelf space, Go Video's DVR4550 stands to simplify a home entertainment center. Don't expect the quality of separate components from this unit, though. It's fine for watching movies and recording off-air television, but high-resolution video and music playback are not its strong points. In our testing, setup was very simple, and we found the remote control uncluttered and well laid out. Basic operation--DVD playback and VHS recording and playback--likewise proved a snap. Music playback was trickier, with both commercial audio CDs and home-brewed MP3 discs (which the unit purports to play). In the former case, it took repeated attempts to initiate playback, though we were delighted to find the 'resume' feature active for CDs as well as DVDs. After stopping, playback resumes from the last point auditioned. If you intend to watch DVDs and tapes via the S-video or component-video outputs, be warned that this device requires an additional composite-video hookup for setup and menu options. (If your TV only has a standard, single RCA composite-video connection in the first place, don't sweat it.) The back panel's hookups include composite-video in and out and a set of component-video outputs. Two sets of stereo RCA analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's choice of optical or coaxial digital-audio outputs for direct connection to an audio-video receiver. In the box you'll find the DVR4550, a user's manual, a remote control, two AA batteries, a composite-video and stereo analog audio interconnect, and a coaxial video cable (for hookup with older VCRs or cable boxes). --Michael Mikesell Buyer Reviews : Features/Technical Specs : What people search: |
