I've owned Microsoft mice since the first one came out. I currently own an Intellimouse Explorer (MS's first optical mouse) and love it.
Since I just bought a laptop computer and my Intellimouse Explorer has trouble working through USB (broken cable??) I decided to purchase a smaller USB mouse. PCMag gives great ratings to this Notebook Optical Mouse and so did many Amazon.com users, which made the decision much easier.
The mouse is great: very precise, solid clicking and a thin cable. My laptop has 3 USB ports, one on back and one on each side so the short cable (27 in.) is not a problem to me.
This mouse is really small and easy to put away with your laptop. This, however, is the only shortcoming I found. The mouse is actually almost too small, although I'm already getting used to it and feel 'weird' when I use my desktop's larger mouse. It measures: 3-1/2' long x 2' wide x 1-1/4' tall.
Installation is a no brainer. I run Windows XP Home and only had to connect the USB cable to my laptop and was mousing right away.
The mouse has a left and right button, plus a large scroll wheel that can act as a third button. It glows red when you use it (the sides and wheel are made of a translucent red material).
Overall, like most Microsoft mice, this one is a great buy though you might want to try it out first if you have large hands - in that case, you may be better of with a larger desktop mouse.
