PYRO 1394DV is a 100 percent digital interface card that links via a provided DV editing cable to a digital camcorder. Digital signals are sent up and down the cable between the PYRO card and the digital camcorder. You can record the video on your computer hard drive in real time while previewing it on your PC screen. FireWire technology even lets you control the camcorder via the computer software, so you can play, fast-forward, rewind, pause, and record all with VCR-type controls. Once you are finished editing, you can save your video into numerous digital video formats or transmit back to your video camcorder. The result is 100 percent digital, first-generation loss-less video.
In the past, to get video into a PC you had to compress and digitize the video with a video capture card. PYRO doesn't need to digitize the video; the digital camcorder does that. Digital Video camcorders record the video information in a digital format onto mini DV tape, or Hi-8 tape for Sony Digital 8 camcorders. The only video compression occurs within the digital camcorder itself during the digitizing process. The result is stunning broadcast quality video at 500 lines of resolution.
The Video Studio 5.0 software included in the PYRO 1394DV package allows you to record motion video or take snapshots and gives you the power to be creative in an easy-to-use interface. Video Studio 5 provides 100 professional transition effects and titles that will fool your friends into believing you went to film school. Once you are finished playing producer, you can make movies in all the popular digital formats, including DV type-1, AVI uncompressed, Quick Time, MPEG1, Streaming video in Real and Microsoft ASF formats, and VCD, and now you can even save as MPEG 2, the same video format used for satellite TV transmissions and DVD movies. You can even use your CD burner to put your video productions onto CD.

The card installed and works fine. The software on the otherhand is useless. I mistakenly believed the reviews I read here and other places, including CNET and even the articles on ADS's site. I'm not sure what sort of editing these people are used to but NLE software should do far more than allow for single track sound editing and confine users to basic cutting tools with very little control of the video clips. Horrible, useless software package. I regret being cheap. Spend the money for a good Firewire card that comes with useful software, like Premiere.
